Swampscott School Committee Unanimously Approves New Five-Year Nahant Tuition Contract

SWAMPSCOTT — April 9, 2026 — Swampscott School Committee unanimously approves a new five-year tuition agreement with Nahant, replacing a 2.5 percent annual increase cap with escalating rates reaching 3.75 percent by FY32. Acting Chair Glenn Pastor and Superintendent Dr. Ben Kalishman negotiated the deal over six to eight weeks; the Nahant School Committee ratified it Tuesday. Annual revenue to Swampscott is projected to grow from roughly $60,000 above prior-year levels in FY28 to approximately $76,000 in the contract's final year, FY32. Nahant continues to bear all special education and transportation costs for its students, who attend Swampscott schools in grades seven through 12. A new reopener clause allows Nahant to send fifth or sixth graders if that community chooses. The committee also heard Kalishman's annual goals review, which showed iReady growth rates of 102 percent in math for kindergarten through fourth grade students under a targeted instruction model, and voted to approve the Select Board's unanimous backing of a Statement of Interest submission for the middle school — a first step in the state school building authority process.
