SWAMPSCOTT — The Swampscott School Committee heard that the elementary school's new athletic field is contaminated with glass and may need a costly rebuild. Director of Facilities Max Casper said a 2026 drainage project likely surfaced glass that had been buried in pre-existing soil beneath the roughly $100 million field, built in 2024, after a student was cut in September. "Why do we have a brand new field that has glass contamination on a $100 million project, right?
It stinks," Casper said. The district does not currently see grounds for a legal claim against contractors but is exploring a landscape-architect-led rebuild plan and capital funding tied to town meeting. Separately, resident Andrea Moore told the committee a 75-response survey showed parent frustration over drop-off lines after Superintendent Jason Kalishman called busing expansion "off the table." The committee also unanimously approved policies JLCD and EFBA, and continued a first read of the visitors policy to November 5.
