Panel Sets Aug. 3 Start For New Trash Carts
Swampscott's Solid Waste Advisory Committee settled on a single-week switch to automated trash and recycling carts rather than stagger the two services as hauler Republic Services had proposed.
Solid Waste Advisory Committee · Meeting of July 13, 2026
Swampscott's Solid Waste Advisory Committee settled on a single-week switch to automated trash and recycling carts rather than stagger the two services as hauler Republic Services had proposed. Both services will go automated the week of August 3, after postcards and new recycling carts arrive the week of July 27. Chair Emily Westhoven and the panel also heard from DPW ex-officio member Gino Cresta that the town's $30 mattress pickup fee may not cover actual costs, since crews collect roughly 25 mattresses every other Saturday on paid overtime; Cresta said "a third of my guys will not accept that overtime" given the condition of discarded mattresses.
The committee learned oversight of trash and recycling formally shifted from the Board of Health to the Department of Public Works on July 13, and that the town has ordered 300 smaller 65-gallon recycling carts after fielding roughly 100 resident requests for cart changes in the rollout's first week.
