SWAMPSCOTT — Tree Committee backs zoning amendment on replacement trees. The Swampscott Tree Committee voted unanimously on June 11 to support a proposed zoning bylaw change requiring owners replacing dead trees in parking lots to plant new trees at specified caliper (diameter) sizes, with owners of larger removed trees able to donate $200 per inch of caliper to the Town Tree Fund. The committee also unanimously approved Tree Protection Guidance for trees removed during construction.
A May tree hearing considered 40 trees, approving 13 for removal and retaining 27. Committee members expressed concern about the Vinnin Square redevelopment's failure to incorporate native tree species as previously recommended.
