Swampscott Select Board clears path for Monday school building vote

SWAMPSCOTT — October 1, 2014 — Swampscott's Select Board heard a final school building pitch Wednesday ahead of a Monday town meeting vote on a proposed $36-million-plus consolidated elementary school. School Building Committee Chair Joe Crimmins and Superintendent Pam Angelakis presented plans for a new grades one-through-four facility behind the middle school on Forest Avenue, with the Massachusetts School Building Authority committed to roughly $17 million in reimbursement if voters approve. Town Administrator Tom Younger confirmed the Finance Committee had endorsed a 30-year bond structure placing the cost at approximately $221 annually for a typical Swampscott household. Selectman Naomi Dreeben requested a breakdown of the $46 million renovation-alternative estimate before Monday's vote; Crimmins offered to connect her with the project's consultants. The board also unanimously formed the Atlantic Crossing Subcommittee, appointed five members to the newly created Historic District Commission, and filled the final seat on the Athletic Field Advisory Committee with Mark McHugh.
