Swampscott School Committee Rejects Move of ALICE Safety Training to June

SWAMPSCOTT — December 15, 2014 — Swampscott School Committee rejected a plan to delay ALICE active-shooter training, approved a restaurant fundraiser for a $16,000 projector, and formalized fees for its new student ID security system at the December 15 meeting. The committee voted three to one against Superintendent Pamela Angelakis's proposal to move a professional development day from January 2 to the final day of school in June, with members arguing the end-of-year timing sent the wrong message about student safety. The committee unanimously approved the Light Up Swampscott program with Uno restaurants, under which 20 percent of receipts from a March-through-May campaign — along with an expected $6,000 to $8,000 in corporate sponsorships — would go toward replacing the high school auditorium's eight-year-old projector. A $10 replacement fee for student ID cards, tied to the district's new LobbyGuard visitor-management system, was established through a special revenue revolving fund. The committee also approved the district's $10,000 annual membership in the North Shore Education Consortium Collaborative, which generated $94,766 in tuition savings last year on services for eight students.
