Open Space Panel Votes to Support Rail Trail Preservation
Open Space & Recreation Plan Committee · Meeting of March 17, 2026
Swampscott open space panel votes to preserve rail trail. The committee unanimously approved a letter supporting the abandoned railroad rail trail after learning the state's Transportation Improvement Plan may remove the project. Chair Tania Lillak led the effort after Director of Community and Economic Development Marzie Galazka coordinated with the state delegation and the MPO Executive Director to address the removal proposal.
The committee is also advancing trail construction at Archer Street, with contractor work beginning March 16 and a September opening targeted, while pursuing grant funding for playground improvements, invasive species removal, and developing policies on open space zoning, light pollution, and winter salt management.
